HOW TO BUILD A HOUSE IN THE MOUNTAINS 13 JUNE 2026 19:00 R120

Roger Lucey is a troubadour extraordinaire and Prince Albert Open Studio’s is so excited to present his show at The Showroom on 13 June 2026.

Roger survived a covert security police campaign which destroyed his music career. He survived the drug addiction and disaffection which followed. He survived a decade and a half as a cameraman documenting the wars of Africa and Eastern Europe. Survival was not enough though. Broken and despairing, he needed to find a way to reclaim his life and creativity. With no previous experience, but with a vague idea that the process might lead to healing, he set out to build a house in the mountains of the Breede River Valley during South Africa’s first years of democracy. This is the remarkable story of that house and the path that led Roger out of the darkness of his past back into the light of his music.

How to Build a House in the Mountains is a memoir as well as a live solo show featuring stories and songs inspired by the journey.

Some reviews of the show:

Moving poetry, human stories, beautiful music. – Mike van Graan, Playwright.

Roger, it was exhilarating to be at your delightful concert… It was a spellbinding, masterful performance, very touching in its nostalgic and prescient vision. Superlative. – Justice John Murphy, High Court Judge.

It was a magical performance, and you had the audience in the palm of your hand. It was all about great music paired with entertaining and honest communication. – Martin Petersen, Chairman of the Barleycorn Music Club.

PIECES OF ME 5 MARCH 2026 11:00(KIDS) 18:00(ADULTS) R20 & R80

Pieces of Me, written and performed by Bo Petersen, is a profoundly moving personal story of the unspoken histories that many people carry within them. An exploration of family secrets, with resonances that still echo today.

“Pieces of Me is more than a play – it is an act of remembrance, a tribute to resilience, and a rallying cry for the reconciliation of South Africa’s collective history. Petersen’s ability to tell her story with such vulnerability and integrity makes this production a rare theatrical gem. It is essential theatre: reflective, moving, and unforgettable.” – Constance Gaanakgomo, News24

With her cousin, Chris Petersen, providing the musical accompaniment and with musical direction by Royston Stoffels, this multi-layered piece of storytelling renegotiates personal histories and asks questions about identity: “Who are you, if you can no longer be who you are?”

A not to-be-missed performance which will remain with you long after the final curtain.

The production is supported by the National Arts Council, New York Bagels and ASSITEJ South Africa in association with the District Six Homecoming Centre.

“Haunting and engrossing biographical theatre… an unforgettable and beautiful theatre experience. Do not miss!” – Robyn Cohen, The Cape Robyn
“One of the best shows I have ever seen. … Absolutely phenomenal performance….by a brilliant chameleon telling her own story of always playing a part” – Siobhan Cassidy

“a show that every South African should see. It’s about a father-daughter relationship that is as unsettling as it is sublime. So raw and tender and intimate and just astonishing in its honesty; I was spellbound from start to finish, she just holds you in the palm of her hand and ravishes you with hard truth.” – Keith Bain

“PIECES OF ME is Bo Petersen’s family history, and it is her relationship with her father. However, it’s also a story that encompasses all of South Africa and our shared past. This balancing act between broad history and personal story is superbly tuned, and it left me feeling emotionally connected to the people around me and my country in a way I was not expecting. “ – Faeron Wheeler, BroadwayWorld Review

Would you Like Some Coffee with Your Coup 18 April 2026 19:00 R150

Veteran journalist Marianne Thamm brings her new show “Would you Like Some Coffee with Your Coup?” to the Prince Albert Showroom on 18 April 2025.

Thamm’s Naledi award-winning first piece of comedy “performance journalism” “Round Of Applause – South Africa Still Standing” was performed over 100 times since it first saw light at the Baxter in 2023.

Since then, Brazilian Butt Lifts, Impalas and Blue Lights have entered the political discourse as the country prepares for local elections later in the year. The Zillenator is eyeing Johannesburg, the ANC is in ICU and the rest are in the dock.

July 2025 marked a turning point in South Africa’s history when General Nhlanhla Mkwanazi called a “bombshell” press conference dressed in combat fatigues.

What about the coup? You will just have to come see the new show and find out.

Marianne Thamm has worked for 40 years as a journalist, author, satirist and comedy writer. Born in Pretoria she lives in Cape Town with her family and dogs.
